Pilot/Ground Tournaments for January

Pilot/Ground Tournaments for January

Postby DWOMT » Tue Dec 23, 2008 11:41 am

Hey guys I've been brainstorming and I'd like your feedback on an idea I have. What if we hold some fun tournaments within this clan? I was thinking maybe some pilot vs pilot and ground vs ground tournaments. Not only does it create fun competition, but also it's a good way to polish our skills when facing an opponent one on one. I was thinking we could do these tournaments next month in January. Here's how I was thinking of working it:

Pilot tournaments would consist of RRB pilots volunteering to be placed in this competition. Pilots names are drawn to face each an opponent 1 on 1 in the first round. Battles will be 15 minutes each on a dogfight only private server. It would be a TDM/DM type set up. Other RRB members would be welcome to log into the server to watch the fight as long as they don't intefere. At the end of the 15 minute round the pilot with the most kills on the other pilot wins the round and will move to the next round. Winning pilots will keep advancing till only one pilot is left standing, and that pilot would be crowned the champion of the tournament until the next tournament is held months later, where that pilot would have to compete to hold their title. Sound interesting?

Ground tournaments would be held in a very similiar way, but ground tournaments are a bit more tricky. It would still be the same forumla with 15 minute rounds for the 1 on 1, and RRB members can log into the private server to watch without interfering. The type of battles could be tank vs tank duels, sniper duels, machine gun duels, rocket duels, jeep dueling, binocular duels. Any feedback you ground pounders want to see for your type of tournament? I am not that good on the ground, so I want you guys to say what you want to see in a ground pounder tournament.

So how does this all sound guys? This sounds like fun I think. Do you guys want this to be RRB guys only, or do you care if we invite outside players to also participate (like a lot of the guys who show up for our practices and hang out with us)?

oh and to add something else to this. The times for these 1 on 1 battles would be set up per the two people fighting each other. They'd be set up almost like a GB with a certain day and time. Makes it interesting that way. Maybe when the tournament is going on Fish could create a separate section for the tournament where the battle times are listed showing who's fighting and what the results are.

As for prizes, I am not sure. Got any ideas guys?

Good point. The tank duels, sniper duels, etc etc would be awesome in close corridor 1 on 1 fights. I like that idea!

does it really need a referee when two players are just gonna wage war on each other in a 15 minute round? lol

I like this idea. Mybe you can make it a double elimination where if you lose your not out you just fight someone else that lost till you lose a second time. Everyone has their bad days it be good to have a second shot , the tournament would last longer also.
For the ground pounder tournament i don't know i guess it could be up to the players if they want specialise in one weapon or just go allout.
Knowing my luck id kill one of the spectators.

LOL I was worried about killing spectators too. For fun I might hurl a TOW missle at the ground spectators watching my battle from below lol. But you and I are thinking alike on this Gab, I was just thinking about double elimination too. Because since a pilot tournament would have the likes of me, you Gab, Kalm, Pocket etc etc...I wouldn't want to discourage anyone from wanting to be in a pilot tournament. Same goes for us pilots worrying about being in the ground tournament. So yeah a double elimination would give everyone a second chance and more reason to want to play.

As for the ground tournament, I was thinking since theirs is a bit different, maybe make theirs a best 2 out of 3 rounds thing. One round could be a close corridor tank duel, sniper duel, and maybe just use everything ground related duel. That could work out. Ground combat has more to it than air combat does.

I love the tournament idea DW. Especially since one on one dogfight matches have such a different element to regular TDM ones. How about this for an idea? Make it a TDM and the people who are rooting for that pilot go on their team. Not really strict alliances or anything just all for fun. Then if they win the match they could shower teammates with clusterbombs or something lol.

Gotta make it an even field though, I mean if one guy has about 5 different weapons and you're stuck with swarms and chaff it's gonna be tough. The only one on one match I've been in, the guy said collect all weapons before we started and everytime one of us died we'd go through that again so both people are even. Although that gives no advantage to the person who killed the other pilot. Maybe collect 3 weapons and then if you kill your opponent you get to choose one other before the respawn? Health has no limits of course. I dunno I'm just brainstorming but you gotta make sure you think carefully about these types of things. Unfair advantages can sour a tourny, but if it comes off right it'll be awesome.

Although on the other hand too many rules can make a tourny stale. Man this is kinda complicated isn't it? lol. Sorry about the double post though guys, just thought I should add that.

Wow Kalm, excellent input and you bring up some great ideas! You're idea about a TDM without alliances got me to thinking maybe in February or March we can do a team based tournament after we do the 1vs1 fighting in January. Maybe say March we can do a 3vs3 based tournament where clan members join up together and fight their way to the top. Now that's an excellent way to build teamwork! Thanks for giving me that idea! That'll be the next tournament!

As for rules you make great points. I honestly didn't think about someone spawning in after just being shot down only to be chased back down again by a pilot who still has the same weapons before as the recently spawned pilot wouldn't have time to re-group himself. That's a definite challenge. I was thinking what you said, maybe when the match first starts both pilots have 30 seconds to grab what they can and then they have to fight. I think a referee will be needed for this then, and that person has to have a mic to communicate to the pilots. The ref will time them. Once a pilot is killed and respawns, the 30 seconds starts again and each pilot has to grab what they can to regroup themselves then they fight again. To make this work the dogfight maps might have to be a bit smaller with the right weapons in place. This will require some research on my part, and any spectators can sit on the ground and watch the dogfight above. What do you guys think?

sweet! Can we use that fish? Also do you think you can make a tournament forum for the Warhawk section. Starting on January 1st I am gonna really start organizing this thing, and use the tournament section to announce who's fighting who on what day and time that way members can go watch if they want to. Also I can use that area to organize future tournaments, especially the idea Kalm gave me about team tournaments.

LOL just kidding. It's all good man. Work on it when you can, it's no rush. We can do the tournament at any time. I honestly am more eager to throw our best pilots at the Blue Angels clan right now :2gs:

Hey DW nice idea and lots of enthusiasim from the guys. coool. nice use of add on pm me if you need any help fish.

I was thinking most maps would be rough for one on one becase even the small maps are huge. you could hide and seak all day long with knives and not see someone.
you may or may not want to disallow knives for the one on one rounds. i like the 3 on 3 squads. small maps are good for somthing like that.

Thanks Oakshan! The private server opens up every once in awhile. I usually announce when it opens up, so I'll keep you updated, no worries :yeh:

and yeah TB, there's some tweeks to work out, but I think a tournament could be fun for the guys. Also it's a good way to sharpen skills.
