Microsoft Performs Mass Xbox Console Banning
Here's a Halloween surprise you probably weren't expecting.

October 30, 2009 - Wake up this morning only to find your Xbox Live account has been banned? That's probably because you had a modded console and were playing illegal, pirated copies of games.

"We have taken action against a small percentage of consoles that have been modified to play pirated game discs," a Microsoft spokesperson told IGN. "In line with our commitment to combat piracy and support safer and more secure gameplay for the more than 20 million members of our Xbox LIVE community, we are suspending these modded consoles from Xbox LIVE."

Though Microsoft wouldn't confirm specifically when these bannings took place, a quick look over on its official forums suggest it's been going on over the course of this past week. Plenty of users have created threads on the technical feedback forum reporting of having their Xbox 360 console banned.

Microsoft also added this is a standing policy and isn't tied to any specific time-frame.

"All consumers should know that piracy is illegal and that modifying their Xbox 360 console to play pirated discs violates the Xbox LIVE terms of use, will void their warranty and result in a ban from Xbox LIVE," the spokesperson added. "The health of the video game business depends on customers paying for the genuine products and services they receive from manufacturers, retailers, and the third parties that support them."

Xbox Live's EULA probably has something about modified consoles. It's always been against the policy they just started cracking down.

I think this is very wrong of M$. I mean now those guys will have to buy new XBOXs. Or buy new accounts right? Very lame on M$'s behalf.

And microsoft takes the hit... although, I don't have any sympathy for that console due to the ridiculous cost of $100 for the Wireless adapter that should be built in.

here is my take Vash is right you buy it you accpet the ELUA

but not to be a fan boy here but the PS3 lets you soft hack the system and add a operating system. thats damn cool.

i threw on my old xbox that was modded and the accounts in it arent banned...probably because the last time i fired that boy up was like months n months ago....i wont fire it up again though...if my bro ends up getting banned then he'll go into a coma or something LOL

ouch. no coma's here please. i think they were either disguising the mod burns as updates or just searchign the online ids not sure how there catching people but its online in some way. ha just fired mine up too. i never moded mine though.

Still, things are meant to be tinkered with it is human nature. Stopping human nature is just like criminal.

I think technically if you obtain a copied game your breaking federal law. So the worst thing they can do is send the cops to your house and arrest you. They get your name and address when you sign up xbox live.
If you like a band, game, move, ect.. buy it! Your supporting the people that make it and then they'll make more.

Tinkering and modding your box to play pirated games are vastly different things.

modding is right on cool pirating is just lame.

Gabe the ps3 allows people to dual boot it. this still just blows my mind. ok i dont use it as a pc almost at all and now yellow dog is pay for ( for shame yellow dog ) but you could.
yeah buying bad games empowers bad delvopers. but its hard to decide sometimes. i got burned recently and i consider myslef a fairly well informed consumer.

human nature. VS EULA ha. its human nature to do a lot of things you can get arrested for in public.
