yeah a router wont really solve your problems as it mainly depends on your upload/download speeds.
most service providers don't offer symetrical speeds so your upload will be alot lower than your download, since most ppl download instead of upload.

You can gain a little tho if your router is configed properly. The little speed test your ps3 does is finding your max speeds and setting the number of players accordingly. So if you cant increase by quite a bit you are screwed, it would also help if all your neighbors were offline too since they are burning up bandwidth. You do share that line with quite a few other ppl.

unfortunetely Fish and TT are on the money its all about how you connect. CABLE DSL FIber shoud all provide you with solid throughput. other wise you are out of luck.

one suggestion is to turn off all other loged on items that might be competeing for bandwidth.

Also, stop using the internet on any computers on your network, that should help at least a little.

And I don't know how you have it set up Kat, but wiring your PS3 to the router instead of using wireless will get you better speeds.

go spend 60 bucks and get a new belkin or linksys N series router, just make sure when you set it up you get it configed right, they ar epretty easy to set up, and it might help on your speeds if you are running wireless, but dont plan on being able to host 20 ppl

my point being stick if your gonna buy a router why waste the money on a G, online games hog bandwidth and an N is designed for better throughput.

are you sure you dont have the numbers backwards? Download should be higher than upload

not for me, ,my upload is nearly twice as fast as my download. i think it's because the exchange server in dilston (where i live) is the oldest in autralia, i think it dates from when australia actually got internet, it's so fucked, from 7-8 o clock the internet can sometimes halve in speed. they call it broadband, but its not even 1 mbs

tek...i just dont know what to say to this....you have serious issues....actually prolly not you but your isp, depending how much bandwidth they are alloted it sounds like they have totally overloaded the highway, I am surprised you can even play online. And yes the 7-8 oclock would prolly be when most ppl are online and burning up each others bandwidth, just think of your internet as a highway, if you are the only driver on the road you can haul ass and have it all to yourself, get a bunch of ppl on that road with you and you will slow to a crawl

yeah i know. i'm going to make as many angry calls as i can to telstra so we can get the internet fixed, they need a new exchange server and they need it fast. one of my firends had a strange experience with the fucked up server, he downloaded a movie in 4 seconds. i think the server alloted him the entire internet bandwidth for a short amount of time. it really sucks. the movie was 680 MB btw

ok sorry kat, would answered you earlier but got side tracked

Your speeds are pretty typical of a standard residential service, so you [i]should[i] be able to host at least 12 with those speeds, if you cannot host 12 then i would recomend a new router, if yours is indeed 5 plus years old all your firmware is more than likely out of date (most ppl dont update their firmware) and is more than likely not configed correctly, (I am assuming it is a G), G 's are not typicly made for online gaming. D link does make a top of the line router but it will set you back a couple hundred bucks. You can buy a good Belkin N router for around 60 bucks at walmart, they are relatively simple to set up and get configed properly. Just make sure that if you do buy a router of any sorts, once you are hooked up check the manufacturers website for the latest firmware update.

Not making any promises but this could possibly help you out.

I have to update my router thru the manufacturers website, just like your OS updates, ps3 updates, whatever updates, you need to keep everything up to date

This will explain firmware http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firmware

Please raise your hand if you didnt know you needed to update your router...
