Clinical Depression

Postby krazykat » Sun Nov 01, 2009 9:43 pm

X = Yes O = No

[X]* you can’t sleep or you sleep too much
[X]* you can’t concentrate or find that previously easy tasks are now difficult
[X]* you feel hopeless and helpless
[X]* you can’t control your negative thoughts, no matter how much you try
[X]* you have lost your appetite or you can’t stop eating
[X]* you are much more irritable and short-tempered than usual
[O]* you have thoughts that life is not worth living (Seek help immediately if this is the case)

I've been thinking bout this a long time several months and done some research. Every site seems to have the symptoms that fit me.

I'm going to my doctor soon. Should I bring it up with him? Should I talk to my mom?

What?! Just thought I could find some guidance from some close friends...

If you really feel like this you should definitively talk to your doctor and family about how you feel. Keeping things bottled up just makes it worse.
Your not alone.

thx, I'm just going to see what people say in this thread for the next day or two. It has kinda been nawing at me for awhile. I mean all these symptoms i don't feel minorly their kind of major in my life. I sleep 14-16hr days. I eat about 2x my daily calorie limit every day just cause I can't stop. If you see my facebook you can tell i'm not fat (Thank gosh for good metabolism and going outside) And it just goes on and on... If i were to report this to my doctor and I am depressed what would I have to do? Take pills? See a therapist?
Last 2yrs or so of my life have just been exceptionally rough and get rougher as time goes on. I just don't want to be able to put a X in that last box...

The thing is idk what my parents would do... When I told them I was an atheist they laughed at me... What if they just laugh this off? Also I don't want to be treated like the child that something went terribly wrong with in my family and stuff...

I'll give you some advice Kat. I too have been in your position, and overcome it. The key thing is, do not let anyone put you on any kind of drug or pill to make it all better. The drugs are a temporary fix that can sometimes make it worse. Do not let anyone talk you into that. I never had to take any drugs luckily. The best thing is to find someone who will listen and talk to you about your problems. Venting and listening helps a lot.

Another great thing that battles depression.....physical activity. For me it was Martial Arts. I started training in Martial Arts awhile back and it does wonders. Even the slower form of martial art known as "Tai Chi" helps a lot. Martial Arts teaches you to harness your inner energy, control it, and extend it outward. Trust me, it kicks the crap out of depression. You should see about finding a good dojo in your area to train in. It does wonders, and you learn how to flatten someone who threatens you or your loved ones.
Wars may be fought with weapons, but they are won by men. It is the spirit of men who follow and of the man who leads that gains the victory.

As a psy undergrad that's not good advice. While yes you would like to avoid meds sometimes it's not about problems in one's life but rather a chemical imbalance. While the severely depressed may end up worse off due to meds (we're talking won't even get out of bed I don't care about anything at all depressed, because it makes them less depressed and they end up caring enough that they then have suicidal thoughts. While before they were so depressed that they didn't care at all) most people do benefit from them. Hopefully meds aren't the answer, in most cases they aren't, but if they are it's something he needs to accept. A good doctor won't recommend meds the first mention of it (unless there is reason to suggest they are needed) so I really doubt that he'll be on meds after mentioning it to the doctor.

DW you could of been having what psychologists call a major depressive episode, which is a different thing from what Kat is talking about.

Now lets not treat me as a science experiment here :nen:
Thx for the advice DW, my violin is your martial arts I think :)
Unfortunately, we don't have a dojo within like a 30mi radius of my town.
Thanks for all the talk guys. So Vash, since your a psy undergrad. What would you say I should do?

Hey kat. Not trying to sound like a insensitive prick or anything, but most of the teens I know love to sleep and eat. Similar to you, my life at home has kinda changed and gotten kinda miserable, because my 15 y/o sister is a whore and my parents don't want her to be. I'm not sugar coating, I'm laying it flat out. My sister is a whore. I don't know what this has to do with you, but I'm just saying, your a teenager. Puberty makes you hungry, and tired. If it turns out to be something more, you have my apologys.

Talk to your doctor. It's possible it's just being a teenager, it's possible it's something more.

drugs will always be a last resort, no matter which doctor you speak to. It may not be something, and it may be. Teen depression is becoming more and more common and i wouldn't discredit the possibility at all. Seek help, Even if it ends out being nothing, then at least you know. no-one can beat it by themselves. so go.

oh and about your parents, religeon is a touchy matter because not everyone agrees on whether or not a higher spirit is up there, and those that do tend to believe in it to the point of unbreakable fact. No-one doesn't believe depression exists.

oh and tell them your joining the church of scientology, that'll make em shit brix.
sorry i can't brain today, i have the dumb
