E3 2009: A Kong King Never Quits
Steve Wiebe made another run at the DK record at E3 today.
by Levi Buchanan
June 2, 2009 - Today at E3, Steve Wiebe, underdog hero to millions of gamers, returned to the game that defines him: Donkey Kong. His mission was to break the current high score record held by his "King of Kong" co-star (and hot sauce impresario) Billy Mitchell, which currently stands at 1,047,200 points. That score is no small achievement. And Wiebe's quest to smash it under the glaring lights of E3 was almost viewed as Quixote-esque in nature.
The "King of Kong" documentary set up a far more nefarious rivalry between Wiebe and Mitchell than what actually existed, filling it with heady doses of intrigue and potential sabotage. However, at today's event, an ill-timed power outage to the Donkey Kong cabinet was downright creepy. Wiebe was doing good. Very good. And then, the screen went blank. Of course, there is zero proof that the power outage was anything but your typical technical snafu, but still... one has to wonder if the well-coiffed force of Mitchell was not lingering somewhere around that machine.
Wiebe is not shaken that easily. If you watched the movie, you know his determination. You know his reserves. And you know he answers adversity with his honest, disarming smile. And so the would-be champion dove back into the game with the intention of making his next run true.
Sadly, Wiebe did not make history today. Wiebe made multiple attempts at the record and came up short each time, even though he did manage to reach the infamous Donkey Kong kill screen. His best score for the day was 989,400 which is still mind-boggling and worth great acclaim. So even though Wiebe did not surpass Mitchell and nail the top spot in the Twin Galaxies record book, IGN would like to offer our sincere congratulations and we hope to see him perched in front of a cabinet very soon, making another run for the title.
got to love the effort sorry to hear he did not break it.
