The Flood in TN

The Flood in TN

Postby MichaelVash7886 » Tue May 04, 2010 11:36 pm

Should of posted this ealier, but most of you probably haven't heard since the national media doesn't care at all but Tennessee (and areas of a couple of other states) was hit hard with 13 inches of rain. While that doesn't sound like a lot, the Cumberland river (and most streams/ lakes/ rivers flooded as well) in Nashville crested at over 12 feet above flood level. Meaning a good bit of downtown Nashville (not to mention areas around Nashville) was covered in up to 10 or more feet of water. http://www.newschannel5.com/Global/cate ... p?C=186722

Pretty sad day when a storm rips through that nobody saw coming, when last I heard 22,000 households don't have power, the city of Nashville is having to conserve drinking water, some communities are literally trapped, no way in or out, and altogether there have been at least 30 deaths, yet a majority of the country doesn't know about it. Lucky for me I live north of Nashville on the rim of the valley that is the Nashville area. The Grand Ole Opry was flooded as well as the first level of Opryland Hotel and the field in the Titans stadium was covered in water to the first ro of seats.

The national media does have some reports on their sites, but very little TV coverage. Honestly I've never seen anything like this. Never saw that much rain in such a short period of time. Flood waters are going down by now of course, but it's going to cost millions if not billions of $ and take a long time to clean up. Be sure to spread the word, as apparently TN isn't "important" enough to be mentioned on the national news for more than 3 or so mins,. yet there are stories posted on UK news sites, and I've heard someone in Ireland say they saw a report on TV.

Maybe as someone else pointed out that we aren't getting any coverage because there aren't masses of people looting, etc. I don't know. Here it is: http://www.section303.com/we-are-nashville-4366

Seems it is getting a bit more national attention now, but not yesterday when things were at their worst.

there is a couple of collection groups raising anything possible through the 911 employees at work. some groups are pitching in. yeah this is a pretty brutal flood destroying many homes and possesions.

Nashville got 13 inches of rain, that's more rain that we would of gotten all of May, heard it was more than we would of gotten in May, June and July put together.

Also it is the most rain we've had in a 48 hr time period since records have been kept.

I know the Red Cross is taking donations as well.

that is an awful situation Vash. any type of natural disaster shows us how small and fragile we all really are and how tentative our dominoin of this planet really is.
sucks when you go through it. hang in there and just do what you can when you can. dont get frustrated when you are powerless that is somthing we all have to understand and accept in certian situations. cant stop a hurricane from hitting my town but i am ready and frosty to make sure my teams equipment is up and funcitoning so they can do thier job.

Oh like I say, I came through fine, we got a ton of rain at the house, but not so much in the way of flooding as there isn't a creek around us and we don't live in Nashville, my biggest problem is how few people even heard about it.

Its sad how the news media over reports on some news to the point where we don't hear about other events. With the oil spill in the gulf and saddest bomber ever in new york their was alot to distract them.
I did see something on the news about the flooding but not nearly enough. I didn't realize how bad it was till I read this.

Hence why I made this thread, I know there was more going on, but kind of strange it wasn't given more than a minute spot.

Well it was a big deal, but at the same time it was stopped, nobody died, definitely news worthy.

"Other and bigger disasters occur". How is a foiled bomb attempt a disaster?

Welcome to America, where we have become indifferent to our own sufferings.

Who cares about a flood in Tennessee when Lady Gaga's latest American Idol show got edited.

Just saying I have seen more news on Lady Gag Me than I have on the flood. :(

Yep, state of the commercial media. I don't watch them, only reliable sources are non profit media. I actually heard about the flood on SBS news here.

As I came home from school yesterday there is still water standing in some low places, haven't been able to keep up with Nashville itself. Saw a decent bit of water still standing in fields in south central KY. I just can't believe it's still there 2 weeks later.
